Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Very dissapointed with York, the town was so busy, people in the bars and pubs at lunch time coming out drunk and shouting about, looked like a cattle market! York was like London during the day and Ibiza in the afternoon/evening, not a historic town we thought it would be, not a place to visit at weekends. We have been told York is now a place for hen and stag do's, this we can see!

Have been to York several times, and, in terms of tourism, it has changed over the years. However it still remains, without doubt, a wonderful place to explore and absorb. Forget the crowds queuing up for Harry Potter style attractions, and become absorbed by the truly amazing history of the city all around you.

Great city, plenty of restaurants and shops loved learning about the history.
Disliked the sightseeing cruise as it took you passed all the bars along the water front and the rest was just trees and bushes, would not recommend.

Great location, easy to walk to attractions.
Great location, easy to walk to attractions. It rained the full day I was there, but that was the only downside. A very interesting, medievil city with a rich history. Lots of good shopping and restaurants too. Easy access by train, can walk from station to lodging in the city center.

York is full of history...and a walking tour is a must.
York is full of history...and a walking tour is a must. The museums and exhibits are all wonderful and offer 12-month use of their tickets! The Minster itself is a marvel and stunning! We've been to York twice in 6 months and have had rain for a few hours on each trip...though this didn't stop us from seeing all we wanted.
After travelling to York a couple of times a year for the last 20 years, it was our first time using this hotel. Galtres is easily the best hotel that we have stayed in. Our room (5) was cosy, clean and great for people watching. Breakfast was delicious and made to order. You literally cannot get any closer to the city centre and the 25% discount on Shambles Q Carpark was brilliant. The staff were super and nothing was too much trouble for them. We will definitely be staying here again in the near future.
Comfortable, spacey apartment, very quiet even though York was extremely busy. Secure gated area & controlled entry to the flats. Practically across the road from the train station & only a short walk from the main city centre. Easy to follow instructions on how to find the key box & directions to the flats. Great value for money compared to what hotels are charging. It's great to have a whole apartment rather than being stuck in a single hotel room, especially when it's for more than 1 night.
Lovely hotel room, great value and owners provided great customer service. Could park directly outside hotel and they provided a parking notice so didn't have to pay anything. Room was very clean, gas central heating is very warm and also has a fan in case it gets too hot. Within walking distance into York Town Centre. Will definitely stay here again when I'm in York.
Best thing was the hotel's location...is five minutes from the train station, ten from the Shambles, YorkMinister and Old City. Rooms were sufficient size, with view of old architecture from them. Front reception staff were wonderful. Check-in and checkout were both quick. We were allowed to store luggage there for several hours on either side of our reservation.
The Moxy is extremely well situated for the city centre, with great bars and restaurants near by and several convenience stores for obligatory hotel snacks. The room was clean, modern and comfortable and we loved our stay! The staff were also super friendly and helpful, providing lots of local knowledge which really appreciated as first time York visitors.
Very nice hotel, well presented, clean and fresh, distinctive style.
Room nicely decorated and finished - again, a lot of style.
Air conditioning in room worked well and came in very useful during what turned out to be a heatwave.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Good location, not far from York city centre and train station.
Very nice hotel living up to it's name. The room was spacious, clean and well appointed with a view overlooking the city wall. Easy walking distance to/from the train station and to the York Minster and York city center. Close access to walk the city wall. Not far from many restaurants.
Breakfast was excellent! Room was a good size and location was easy walking distance to York city center. Staff was wonderful and accommodating.
A note to Americans who have not traveled in England before: bring your own washcloths - overnight accommodations do not provide them.
Was given free upgrade to ensuite room, the room was very comfortable, hot water for shower on tap in bathroom, room well furnished and modern in look and would not look out of place in more expensive hotel. And within walking distance of York City Centre win win!
As aways, the room was spotless and had everything that we required.
The bed was very comfortable and the black-out curtains ensured a good nights sleep.
The hotel is ideally situated for functions at the York Barbican and Picadilly
Staff were very accommodating, welcoming and super super helpful.
Our room was lovely - lots of character - and the location of the hotel was just fantastic. Exactly what we wanted for our time in York !
Great location for travel to York. The hotel has generally been refurbished well. My room was small but well-laid out. The very busy and over-worked staff were polite and charming
Beautiful boutique hotel with only a short walk to york minister. The staff went above and beyond in so many areas to make our stay perfect! Amazing room called the "Yorkie"
City Centre close to hotel.valet parking beneath hotel is a little cheaper than the carpark opposite. Parking is a problem in York.
Had a room overlooking Clifford's Tower.
I was made very welcome by all the staff.
This hotel is ideally placed for a visit to York, with parking on offer and within walking did=stance of the city centre.
